The Ministry of Women’s Affairs of the State of Katsina says it will embark on a campaign to raise consciousness
among women in the state about the need to come out in mass and run for elective political offices in 2023.
Hajia Rabiatu Muhammad-Daura, Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, who declared this in a conversation with newsmen in Katsina on Thursday, denounced
the existing situation in which the state does not have a female representative in either the national or state assemblies.
“We are starting from the bottom up, we want many women to come out and contest for seats at the state House of Assembly in 2023,” she said.
In 2021, Muhammad-Daura promised women that empowerment packages will
help them be self-reliant and increase their economic status.
She said the proposal for more packages in the coming year was in line with the
commitment of the administration to improve women’s living standards due to the role they play in society.
The Commissioner recalled that 34,000 women were empowered by the government with clean cooking gas cylinders,
and connected thousands of others to different financial institutions that provided them with start-up capital in 2020.
She announced that the ministry will also continue to strengthen its
campaign against substance addiction among women, along with the relevant authorities.
