Prof. Nora Daduut of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been announced by the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the Senate Plateau South by-election held on Dec. 5.
The by-election was carried out in order to fill the vacancy
created by the death on Feb. 9 of Sen. Ignatius Longjan.
INEC Returning Officer Prof. Idris Amali declared that Daduut had received 83,151 votes to beat her
nearest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent, Mr George Daika, with 70,838 votes, a margin of 12,313 votes.
“Daduut, having scored the highest number of votes cast and fulfilled the requirements of the law is hereby returned elected,” Amali said.
The total number of accredited voters for the election was 159,191,
while the number of votes cast was 157, 803, he said.
According to him there were 155, 659
valid votes, while 2,144 votes were refused.
A breakdown of the local government results, as declared by the returning officer, suggested that
the APC received 12, 241 votes in Langtang North, while the PDP scored 16, 841 votes.
The APC polled 9,321 against the
PDP’s 12, 439 votes in Langtang South
The APC received 8, 425 votes in Mikang Local Government, where
the PDP candidate is from, while the PDP received 7, 887 votes.
The APC had 18, 542 votes in Shendam, while the PDP had 10, 223
votes; the APC had 21, 838 votes in Wase, while the PDP had 12,807 votes.
The outcome of Quan Pan, the APC candidate’s home local government, showed that APC had 12,784 votes, while the PDP had 10, 641 votes.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) records that eight other political parties, apart
from the APC and the PDP, were also involved in the election.
