The Committee on Education , Science and Technology of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly
has expressed the resolve of the assembly to support improved education quality in the state.
Its Chairman, Mr Daniel Ogazi (APC-Kokona East), who spoke in Lafia
on Monday, identified quality education as central to human and social development.
Ogazi addressed the leadership of the State College of Education, Akwanga, and Lafia College of
Agriculture, Science and Technology, who appeared before the committee to review their budget results for 2020.
“The importance of the education to human and societal development cannot be over emphasised, so our committee is determined to support tertiary institutions to provide quality education,” he said.
He said the essence of the evaluation of the budgetary performance of the two entities was to
decide how the implementation allocations made to them during the year under review could resolve the inherent challenges.
“We are here to assess how you performed in implementing the 2020 budget, this exercise is also in preparation for the 2021 budget.
“When we know your budget performance in 2020, we will be properly guided ahead of the 2021 budget, and as a committee, we are bent on achieving standard and quality education,” the chairman said.
He urged the management of the two institutions to make effective
use of the Governor Abdullahi Sule-led government’s education policies and programs.
“You have to be alive to the tasks before you, improving the education standard in your institutions is a task you cannot afford to joke with,” he said
Dr Roseline Kela, Interim Administrator, College of Education, Akwanga, previously reported that
the outbreak of COVID-19 had disrupted the institution’s flow of academic activities.
However, Kela told the committee that the college was determined to
ensure that all safety precautions against the pandemic were strictly followed.
Dr. Yahaya Musa Maikeffi, Provost, Lafia College of Agriculture,
Science and Technology, expressed his devotion to raising academic standards.
He urged the state government to provide the requisite
funding for the acquisition of facilities to facilitate better learning.
