For the first ever virtual edition of the Next Einstein Forum Global Gathering (NEF-GG), Africa’s largest scientific gathering,
scientists, scholars, delegates and key decision makers from Africa and around the world will convene from 8-10 December 2020.
The event this year will take
place through the Airmeet video conference platform.
This year’s conference will discuss science leadership in the battle against pandemics, such as the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the building of resilient education systems, the
critical role of the digital economy and youth jobs, among other topics, with a focus on finding ways to improve the scientific future of Africa.
AIMS Founder and Chairman of the Board, Prof. Neil Turok, will join other leading global voices in the innovation and policy ecosystem to explore paths to a technologically
self-sufficient Africa on the subject of Discovering the Next Einstein-Africa, leading the world in technological exploration, followed closely by IRCAD France Chief, Prof. Jacques Marescaux’s Mathematics and Mathematics Session.
NEF-GG 2020 will also include plenary and breakout sessions, such as Mathematical Sciences’ commitment to
fostering robust disease prevention, how to tap into the virtual workforce, and African COVID-19 developments.
Meet with some
of the speakers
The Minister of Education, Rwanda, Hon. Dr. Valentine Uwamariya,
will speak on disruptive thinking for resilient education systems.
Innovative collaborations and economic resilience in the midst of health crises
will be presented by Diane Karusisi, CEO of Bank of Kigali.
The Fields Medalist, Prof Caucher Birkar, will
talk about mathematics for a better future.
The panel on mathematics for a better world will also be
moderated by Prof Loyiso Nyongxa, Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union.
World Bank Data Scientist Dr Dunstan Matekenya will be
speaking on Big Data Innovation for COVID-19 in Africa.
Dr Kommy Weldemariam, Chief Scientist, IBM Research Africa Labs (NEF Fellow), will
share an overview of the digitalisation, skills growth and technology situation in Africa.
The dialogue on digitization, skill creation and infrastructure will
be moderated by Hennie Bester, Perspective 2 Impact Lead/CENFR.
Dr Eliane Ubalijoro, Deputy Executive Director, Global Open Data in Agriculture and Nutrition,
will address digitalization, creative collaborations and economic sustainability in the midst of health crises.
The biennial Global NEF Gatherings are
the flagship event of the NEF.
The NEF Global Conferences, far from an ordinary science
forum, placed science at the core of global development efforts.
The voices of global science leaders have the potential to be heard and have a direct influence on the scientific future of Africa, in the presence
of scientists (Nobel Prize and Field Medal laureates), political and business leaders, civil society and the media, and with a strong emphasis on youth and women.
