The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has advised public officers to strictly adhere to the moral ethics and principles guiding activities of government and individual performance.
Prof. Muhammed Isah, Chairman, CCB, made the call in Abuja, at a one-day workshop on strict compliance with assets declaration and code of conduct for public officers.
The workshop was organised for member of staff of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN).
Isah, who was represented by Prof. Samuel Ogundare, Federal Commissioner, Education, Advocacy Services of the Bureau, said the mandate of the Bureau was to conduct government businesses with professional competence.
He added that the bureau was committed to ensuring that the actions and behaviour of public officers conform to the highest standards of public morality and accountability.
According to him, it is extremely important for the members of the council to be familiar with asset declaration and the code of conduct of public officers.
“Public officers are in custody of the wealth of the nation, traditionally they are supposed to implement the policies using the resources of the nation.
“At the same time, we want to safeguard the resources of the nation so that these resources do not go to the wrong hands.
“We don’t want to go for prosecution without education, that is why we are putting education first so that everybody will legally be aware that ignorance of the law is not excusable.
“But in the moral aspect, we want to see that everybody is fully aware of what they have to do, so that their attitude will change and their disposition to the use of resources will be to the benefit of the nation,” he said.
He also urged the participants to pass the lessons and knowledge gained from the workshop to their colleagues in their various departments.
Mr Elijah Mohammed, Registrar, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), appreciated the bureau for training its members, adding that it would create more awareness among its staff.
Mohammed also urged the participants to adhere to the code of conduct for public servants, as it was part of efforts at ensuring the country was corrupt-free.
On his part, Mr Ben Ajah, Director of Human Resource, PCN, a participant, appreciated the council and bureau for the initiative to train its members on the guiding ethics and principles guiding public officers.
