Due to the outbreak of violence during the # EndSARS protests, the Lagos state government has placed a 24-hour curfew in the state.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos.
While the demonstrations against police brutality continued, there were incidents of violence in the state.
Hoodlums took advantage of the situation, unleashing assaults on protestors and security groups.
On Monday, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the state police command were targeted by hoodlums.
And on Tuesday, a police station at Orile-Iganmu was set ablaze.
Portraying the measure as “ monstrous, ”the governor, in a tweet, said the curfew takes effect from 4 pm on Tuesday.
Dear Lagosians, I have watched with shock how what started as a # EndSARS peaceful protest has degenerated into a monster that threatens our society’s well-being. As criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these demonstrations to unleash havoc on our state, lives and limbs have been lost, ” he added.
We will not watch and permit chaos in our dear state as a government that is alive to its duty and has shown a commitment to the # ENDSARS movement.
Therefore, as of 4 pm today, October 20, 2020, I hereby place a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the state.
“No one should be found on the streets except vital service providers and first responders.”
