Cartons of live ammunition were discovered on Sunday on Awka Road in Onitsha, Anambra, after a truck transporting them collided with a drainage and spilled its load.
The incident, according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), caused concern among residents of the city, who later alerted the police.
On Monday, an eyewitness told NAN that police were immediately sent to the scene and that the truck driver, who was injured, was arrested.
“The driver and his assistant, who also was injured, tried to gather and conceal the content of the truck but could not do much due to the arrival of the police operatives,” the source added.
According to the source, when the assistant driver saw the police, he fled the scene, leaving the driver behind. DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said the vehicle and its contents had been recovered.
Ikenga said: “At about 4:00p.m. on May 9, 2021, there was an accident involving a truck along Awka expressway, Onitsha, and on receipt of this information, Police operatives, military and other security agencies rushed to the scene and quickly cordoned off the area and recovered the truck with its contents.
“Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to state criminal investigation department for further investigations,” Ikenga said.
