According to state broadcaster CCTV, a hotel collapsed in eastern China on Monday, killing at least one person and leaving ten people missing.
According to CCTV, seven people were rescued from the wreckage of the inexpensive Siji Kaiyuan hotel in Suzhou, a renowned tourist destination.
The rescue was “fully underway,” according to CCTV, and authorities were looking into the origin of the accident.
According to its listing on the travel portal Ctrip, the Siji Kaiyuan debuted in 2018 and has 54 guest rooms, as well as a banquet hall and meeting rooms.
More than a dozen rescue personnel in helmets were seen at the tragedy site, with the hotel’s distorted facade visible above a mound of wreckage, according to CCTV images.
Building collapses and accidents are widespread in China, generally as a result of low building standards or corruption.
