Sen. Orji Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip, has denounced the attack on the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia’s Ohafia Local Government Area (LGA).
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), unidentified hoodlums set fire to the INEC office on Sunday, destroying electoral materials and furniture.
Kalu characterized the act as undemocratic and uncivilized in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja.
The former governor of Abia has urged law enforcement agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the attack in order to find and prosecute the perpetrators.
He emphasized that, for the sake of progress, Nigeria’s growing democracy must be safeguarded.
Though urging politicians to respect democratic values in their endeavors, Kalu stressed that politics was not a life or death situation.
He said: “The attack on INEC office in Ohafia local government area of Abia state, is needless and unacceptable.
“Nigeria’s electoral body, INEC, has sustained its leading role in the promotion and sustenance of democratic tenets in the country.
“The sponsors and perpetrators of the attack are enemies of the country.
“I implore security agencies to fish out the people behind the attack in a bid to forestall recurrence.”
Kalu also urged INEC not to give up on its attempts to keep Nigeria’s democratic principles alive.
