Miss Divine Nwaneri, a first-year student at Imo State University, was killed by a stray bullet on April 24. The Imo government expressed its condolences to her family on Wednesday.
Mr Declan Emelumba, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, who met with the family in his office in Owerri, described her death as a “massive loss.”
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), a 22-year-old ABSU Soil Science student was hit by a stray bullet fired by a security personnel in front of the state Government House in Owerri.
Emelumba told the family that the state government would take all necessary steps to provide them with the assistance they needed.
He went on to say that the state government had taken decisive steps in collaboration with security agencies to restore peace to the state and ensure the safety of people and property.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to residents’ welfare and protection.
“We feel your pain, very deeply and we assure you that government will alleviate your pains to the extent possible. Please be consoled.
“Our amiable governor, Hope Uzodimma is synergizing with security agencies and calm is gradually being restored to the eastern heartland,” he said.
Mr Harrison Nwaneri, the deceased’s father and a Lagos-based pastor, thanked the commissioner for the state government’s “quick intervention” in his response.
Mr Nnamdi Anyaehie, the governor’s Chief of Staff, was in the hospital to facilitate care until she gave up at the Federal Medical Center in Owerri, he said.
He was also pleased with the state government’s attempts to relieve the family’s suffering so far.
“I am deeply grieved but all the same I am also satisfied with government’s efforts to alleviate our pains in this trying time,”.
Divine will be buried on May 14 in their village in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state, according to Nwaneri.
