The former President of South Africa and Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission
(AUEOM), H.E. Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe, has arrived in Accra for the country’s upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
A three-day orientation and briefing program for the African Union Election Observer
Mission (AUEOM) was conducted from 3-5 December 2020, prior to his arrival.
The briefing centered on the political context of the elections, such as the arrangements by the Ghana Electoral Commission (EC), the Ghana Police Service and the level of preparedness
in the run-up to the polls; the Ghana Legal Structure for Elections; and other presentations by various stakeholders in the election observation methodology in Ghana and the African Union (AU).
The purpose of the briefing was to allow observers to
better understand and appreciate the conduct of the upcoming Presidential Elections.
AUEOM’s deployment to Ghana is in line with the mandate of the AU to foster and deepen democracy and democratic elections on the continent, as enshrined in specific instruments of the
African Union (AU), such as the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration on Principles to Control Democratic Elections in Africa; and the 2002 AU Election Guidelines
It is also aligned with the expectations of the 2063 AU Agenda, in particular with Ambition No.3, which
seeks to ensure the continent’s good governance, democracy and respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law.
The purpose of the Election Observation Mission of the African Union (AUEOM) is to make an independent, objective and impartial assessment
of the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana on 7 December, in compliance with national, regional and international democratic election standards.
The AUEOM Accra secretariat is based
